Japan is an island nation, located off the Asian mainland’s coast in the Pacific Ocean. The four largest islands, from the northernmost to the southernmost, are Hokkaido, Honshu, Kyushu and Shikoku, whose combined total area make nearly the total area of the country.

How to get to Japan?
Unless you are visiting Japan as part of the itinerary of a cruise ship, the easiest way to get to the “land of the rising sun” is by plane. There are several international airports in the main islands: there’s Sapporo-Chitose International Airport in Hokkaido, Tokyo is served by two major international airports – Narita and Haneda -, still in Honshu, there’s Osaka‘s Kansai International Airport and Nagoya‘s Chubu Centrair International Airport. Finally, in Kyushu, Fukuoka Airport also receives international flights.
Japan Airlines, the flag carrier airline, and All Nippon Airways (ANA) are the main Japanese airlines flying to destinations in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.
When to go to Japan?
Japan is a welcoming and enjoyable destination year-round. Nonetheless, there are differences depending on the season of the year.
Located in the North hemisphere, winter in Japan extends from December to March, while summer goes from June to September. In winter, temperatures are usually lower than 10ºC in the major cities and drop below 0ºC in the mountains and in Hokkaido, while in summer, temperatures may reach as high as 40ºC. However, the rainy season comes in the summer months, when even typhoons may occur.
Moreover, Japan is also highly demanded thoughout the cherry blossom season, which begins soon after January in the southern islands of Okinawa, reaching Honshu’s Tokyo and Kyoto by late March/beginning April.
